In 1736 the French Geodesic Mission, presided over by La Condamine and accompanied by Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa representing Spain, arrived in Ecuador. It is not known with certainty if La Condamine stayed in the hacienda of Guachalá, but it is known that part of the Mission recognized the plain of Cayambe and stayed in Guachalá establishing the hill Pambamarca as a reference point.
La Condamine reports that the stakes they placed to make the measurements were stolen by the natives every night even at the risk of their own lives, since they believed that they used them to delimit the domains of the Spaniards, dispossessing them of the few lands they had left, induced by the murmurings of latifundistas, butlers and caporales of the surroundings.
Due to the above, and added to the inequality of the land in Guachalá the mission decided to continue its measurements in the plain of Yaruquí. It is believed that they located the equatorial line at 2km from the Casa de Hacienda starting the lands of the Hacienda between the two hemispheres placing a tombstone that today rests in the Astronomical Observatory of Quito. The precise place where they originally placed the tombstone is unknown.

Cayambe Coca National Park

Guided by its name, one could say that the Cayambe – Coca National Park protects the snow-capped Cayambe volcano and the springs of the Coca River, but in truth, this is rather the national water park. There is water everywhere, in the environment because of constant fog and rain, in the vegetation and leaves of the soil, in the wetlands and lagoons of the upper part, in the soil and the moor pads, and in the rivers that form falls and waterfalls.
In the upper part there are famous hot springs and mineral waters such as those of Papallacta and Oyacachi. In this region are the springs of rivers such as the Dué, the Chingual, the Cofanes and the Cabeno that feed the Aguarico, so that together with the Coca they deliver their waters to the great Napo river.
On the other hand, towards the western foothills, it is home to hundreds of springs that feed the Mira and Esmeraldas rivers that flow into the Pacific Ocean.
